Professional Lime Pointing
Since lime was used to create all structures before 1900, it is suitable to use lime for pointing as well. When applied to older homes, cement pointing is extremely difficult and can eventually crack owing to wall movement because of its lack of flexibility. When cement pointing fractures, water can enter the building’s structure without being able to evaporate or escape again. If this is not acknowledged or dealt with, it causes damp difficulties and may lead to serious structural problems.
We cover all areas of South Wales including Cardiff, Bristol, Bridgend, Newport, Cowbridge, Neath, Swansea, Carmarthen, Llanelli and Ammanford. We also provide nationwide Lime Pointing & Rendering repairs across the UK.
Render Surgeon are skilled in removing cement pointing and installing lime in its place. To avoid damaging the other building elements, such brick or stone, this task needs to be completed with extreme caution. The property’s original appearance will be restored if we can locate even a tiny sample of ancient pointing, which we will combine with aggregates, ashes, and chalk to create the proper colour and texture. If required, we can perform various pointing samples for a conservation officer or client’s permission.
Unlike cement, which is typically grey and hard, lime pointing has a colourful, soft-looking, textured surface. If done correctly, lime pointing should require little maintenance because it can withstand movement over the seasons and as the building collects and releases moisture. Lime mortar was used to flush-point the stone. Rainwater runs off the wall without gathering in cracks thanks to this very efficient pointing technique.
Lime Rendering & Rough Cast
A surface layer called lime render is used to shield a building’s substrate, which might be built of straw bale, brick, stone, or cob. It lets the walls “breathe” and is softer and more flexible than cement. This implies that moisture escapes the walls and keeps water from accumulating inside the structure. Breathable materials were used in the construction of all structures before to the twentieth century.
Modern materials don’t function the same way, and in older properties, cement render frequently cracks, allowing water to enter the property and creating damp issues. Water cannot escape once it is trapped within the property, and the damp conditions can cause the timbers, especially the lintels, beam ends, rafter ends, and joist ends, to rot.
Render Surgeon frequently render lime on a variety of backgrounds and situations at Lime Repair, and we have the know-how to handle the structural repairs and replacements required for lintels and other timbers when such issues occur.
In addition to lime render, our speciality is roughcast, a classic lime coating that can be put directly to flush-pointed masonry or to one or two lime render layers to create a textured finish. The texture is gritty because the coat is “thrown on.” Because of its larger surface area, it facilitates evaporation and keeps the structure dry. Historically, roughcast was employed on a variety of buildings, ranging from the largest castles in Scotland to typical farm homes in Somerset.
