Pebble-Dash

Professional Pebble Dash Application & Repairs

Pebble dashing, also referred to as ‘rough-cast’, is a form of exterior wall finish which combines a wall render coating with a choice of smooth pebbles to create a decorative finish. Pebble dashing aggregates are used for both decorative purposes and to protect the external walls of new and refurbished buildings.

The finished surface provides a virtually maintenance free finish. Spa is a common alternative, which most people who describe as ‘pebble dashing’ but is in fact formed by using jagged chippings from spa stones. These tend to jam further into the surface, so often last longer.

We cover all areas of South Wales including Cardiff, Bridgend, Newport, Cowbridge, Neath, Swansea, Carmarthen, Llanelli and Ammanford. We also provide nationwide rendering repairs across the UK.

How does pebbledashing work?

If performed by a skilled technician, pebble dashing can add distinctive character to a building, or to add an organic or textured finish to modern structures. Much like exterior wall rendering, pebble dashing can be used to transform the look of a building or create a neat decorative finish. It has historically been used as an easy way to cover unsightly brick work, breeze blocks or walling fillings where a building has been modernised and extended.

Pebbledash and Spa also adds an extra layer of insulation and forms a waterproof layer, as long as no damp-proof courses are bridged. In fact, it is often used to resolve damp problems, with a waterproof additive used in the render.

Pebble Dashing Your Walls

The process of pebble dashing walls is essentially the same as rendering, just with the addition of smooth pebbles or jagged shingle spa being applied at the damp topcoat render to embed them into the wall surface.

Exterior Wall Plinths

At the bottom of each wall we put a plinth, which is a section of smooth render designed to form a break between the pebble dashed surface of the walls and the ground. This serves to minimise the prospect of damp affecting the walls of your property below the damp course.

A rendered plinth can be expected to last up to about 40 years. Being as it is used to repel damp, it means that the plinth is the part that suffers the most damage from damp. Keeping a regular check on the plinths is important to minimise the risk of any damp occurring.

Choose your pebble-dash stones

We can offer you a choice of stones to coat your walls. The choice of these will depend on your design scheme and your intentions and can be left as exposed stones or painted.

For people opting to have an exposed stone finish, you can choose between an assortment of different stone, gravel and spa types, which can include various colours ranging from whites and creams to dark basalt and combinations of colours. The most commonly used types are Canterbury and Dolomite spa.

If you wish to paint-over the surface, you might just opt for a low budget ordinary stone mix, but this is of course down to your personal preference.
